Harry Potter Blanket Squares

These charts were made by myself using PMstitch creator 2.0,

The inspiration for this project came from Totallee's amazing works.
Click on each chart to enlarge, print, or save it etc.

I personally do not plan to make all these blocks myself. However I thought I would include as many characters as possible so people can pick and chose as the feel fit :D
There is not a 'guage' so to speak for these blocks, they can be knit (or crocketed for that matter) in and gauge yarn so long as you have
5 stitches across = 7 rows up

All the blocks are 80 stitches across by 111 rows, these figures include a single stitch/row all the way around as a selvedge stitch, shown in black.
The blocks require 5 colours

  • Background colour of your choice
  • White
  • Light grey
  • Medium grey
  • Black
Quantities will vary depending on your yar weight and if you are knitting or chocheting

This pattern is listed on Ravelry HERE

I will most likely continue to add to these blocks.. so If you think of a charactor that I have missed, I would love you to tell me, I might add them in...

to be continued...

  4. Oh Candice- these rock!

I think a dumbledore pillow would make a 10yr old boy very happy. Do they take long to knit?

    ReplyDelete
  5. These are great! Will you be adding Remus Lupin?

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  26. Amazing! I looked at the software. Does it allow you to change from a square graph to the knitting graph that you used? I'd love to make an afghan with hockey players!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Okay, this is wickedly stellar! I'm adding that "Hedwig" to my queue.

    ReplyDelete
  28. You are my hero! I watched totalee make her Harry Potter blanket and was so sad that there were no charts! But now I can make anyone of them I want! I need a Malfoy set stat! Thanks so much once again! <3

    ReplyDelete
  29. Could you add one for Percy Weasley? I mean, I know he's an idiot, but I want to make on for each member of the Weasley family.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Thank you so much for these! I've always been a little wary of intarsia and picture knitting, but I think the HP gang might make me jump off the ledge and go for it!

    ReplyDelete
  32. This is now on my bucket list! I want to make all of them :)- Ivy

    ReplyDelete
  33. I want to make so so so many of these! I was wondering if maybe you could have another Draco? Younger? Or even older? The third movie Draco is my least favorite because of his weird-not-normal-why'd-they-do-that-haircut. Not that he isn't dreamy! :D

    ReplyDelete
  34. Any chance you'll be adding to this? I'd love to see a block with Lily and James Potter. =)

    ReplyDelete

  36. Oh my god, you're awesome! These charts look amazing, can't wait to knit one of two. If you're still taking suggestions, what about a dragon and a Hogwarts castle chart? I'm so excited I found these, thanks for sharing! :D

    ReplyDelete
  37. has anyone tried to crochet these?

I'd feel more confident with my work if I tried to do it that way, but what hook do you use?

also, does it get hard using all the different colors and changing them out with crocheting? would it be easier to knit?

thanks! I'm new at all this and pretty much teach myself( which is what we all do I guess :)

    ReplyDelete
  38. Wow! I am looking forward to knitting these. So many lovely shots you chose.

I have a request to ask of you. My friend is currently working on a fanfiction. I would like to make her a blanket with some squares but it would require a square of Bellatrix's husband Rodolphous. Since no actor plays him I was wondering if you would consider using a picture of Gerard Butler she gave me (that's the model she uses for him and wallpapers and such) and making a square of him so that I could make her one of the most epic Christmas/Birthday presents ever.

This is the photo that she uses. http://www.wrathofgods.com/press/pressmaterials/Gerard_Butler_in_Glacier_Lagoon.jpg

If you could be of any help I would very much appreciate it and I know she would too.

    Thanks in advance.

If you need to contact me you can reach me at lbusser [at] gm [dot] slc.edu

    ReplyDelete
  41. Have you made a Scabior, the snatcher one? Or any of the new Deathly Hallows characters?

    ReplyDelete
  42. These are BEAUTIFUL. If I make it past Christmas, I'm going to start right away!!!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Although this pattern is for knitting, is it possible for me to still use it for crochet? Can I make every square a single crochet?

    ReplyDelete
  44. I would love it if you could make an Oliver Wood one!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Amazing work and so infinitely generous of you! Thanks, I think a Harry pillow is in my future!

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  47. hi!!,,=),,this is really cool!!,,,i have a question tho,,,i tried to print out the graphs that i wanted to make and it comes out too big so it doesnt all fit on a reg sheet of printer paper,,it cuts off like the right 15 rows,,and i cant figure out a way to shrink the pattern,,,im sure this is a "dummy me" type thing but if you have any suggestions i would appreciate,,=),,THX

  59. Hi everyone! thank you all for all your lovely comments, every one of them has made me smile :D.

At this stage, with 2 kiddies under foot and studying at uni I will not likely not be doing any more block, as each block takes quite a few hours to do.

Good new is though, I do plan on creating a bit of a video tutorial on how *I* knit these blocks. I expect that I will get it done over the next 3-4 weeks, between uni assessments.... bare with me

    ReplyDelete
  60. I may be mistaken but are there two hippogriffs? Are they both Buckbeak *cough* *cough* I mean Whitherwing?

    ReplyDelete
  61. Hard to tell when its not colour, but one is actually Fawkes! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  62. DUH! I am so dumb! i see now, thanks for telling me!

    ReplyDelete
  63. Candice, I was wondering if you have an ETA for your video tutorials? I know that you're busy but thought I'd ask =)
I would love to try my hand at these, but in crochet.

    ReplyDelete
  64. An Oliver Wood one would be amazing..My best friend LOVES Oliver Wood, (her kids middle name is Oliver lol) and I would LOVE to make her a pillow. Flitwick would be awesome as Warwick Davis was the star of a movie I was named after. =] What about McGonagal? Or the House Crests? Crabbe and Goyle? Cho? Would be super cool to do like House themed blankets, or different age groups, or to do an Order blanket, or a bad guy blanket...OMG I have so much work to do!! Lol. Could we try to do a Fawkes one? Maybe I'll just have to get the program...lol

    ReplyDelete
  65. Just discovered these awesome charts. Hubby would also like to see Hooch, Slughorn, Cedric Diggory, Peter Pettigrew, Cornelius Fudge, Sorting Hat, Moaning Myrtle. He obviously wants me to be busy and make him a something big enough to cover the house!

    ReplyDelete
  66. I completely agree with the previous post! I'm currently on my 9th square, I'm making a blanket for a friend for christmas, she's a Harry Potter fanatic, more so than me! also, wondering if you could put some others of Harry Ron, and Hermione. Maybe also a Hermoine at the Yule ball in addition to a more recent one..

    ReplyDelete
  67. an older dudley and the other dursleys please? also an older malfoy and greyback and mrs figg? maybe even a dementor ooh and a thestral? peter pettigrew and him as scabbers? and mrs malfoy? and an older ginny please? i love her!

    ReplyDelete
  69. Thank you so much for posting this! I was wondering about how much yarn it takes to make one square.

    ReplyDelete
  70. I would like to request a younger Harry and Hermione. Maybe from like the fourth year or secound year to go with the younger Ron

    ReplyDelete
  71. I agree with Stargazer that a younger Hermione and younger Harry to go with the younger Ron :) and another vote for the Housecrests

    ReplyDelete
  72. I knitted the Harry square into a pillow for my son!! It was a fun project and he loves he!! My younger son is a senior in homeschool and I'm wanting to knit him a Doctor Who blanket. I would like four picture squares for it. I'm trying to use the program to design them and am having no success!! Can you give me any hints?

    ReplyDelete
  73. These are amazing. I can only *imagine* the amount of time you put into them. Many of us (yes, even though an adult for...ah...quite a while now) Harry Potter fans would LOVE to see every single character ever mentioned in any footnote of The History of Quidditch charted out, but you've given us all such a generous gift already, it seems almost churlish to request more.

And now you have your own children. :-) You'll be able to read to them, as they go through the age-appropriate stages, the stories.

For crochet: One very successful method of working charts via crochet is Tunisian crochet, which also used to be referred to as "afghan stitch." Look up videos, websites, etc. on Tunisian crochet.

Use a lighter-weight yarn and a larger hook for Tunisian than you would for either knitting or regular crochet. For instance, a worsted yarn/H hook (= #8 needles) combination would work better in Tunisian as a DK yarn/J or K hook. This is b/c Tunisian stitches each row twice (one forward pass and one return pass).

    ReplyDelete
  77. Can you put up Aberforth Dumbledore, Seamus Finnigan, and an older Dudley Dursley. Oh and Harry's Parents! Lillie and James Potter!

    ReplyDelete
  78. Fantastic. Thank you so much for sharing with us.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Is there any way to make the lines inbetween the stitches a color other than black?? It's so hard to tell how many stitches should be black and how many shouldn't be because there is no line ):

    ReplyDelete
  80. I guess I will sleep well, with Voldemort on my blanket. XD

    ReplyDelete
  81. These are awsome! Please can you try to make the golden snitch...I know it isn't a person, but I'm obsessed with Harry Potter!!! :) Thanks X

    ReplyDelete
  84. I would like a pattern... please!!!

    ReplyDelete
  85. Hi Candice,
I was wondering if you are still interested in making more of these charts or if you have any tips for people wanting to make their own within the same stitch and row count as yours so they will match up?
I'm currently 3/4 of the way through knitting my first panel, Luna and I would like to make Hermione next. However i'd really like a happy smiling Hermione. I've tried reducing Lee's crochet pattern to 80 stitches but it just chops off too much of the background colour. Any help you could give me would be much appreciated!

    ReplyDelete
  86. These are absolutely amazing!!!! Thank you so much for sharing these!!!

    ReplyDelete
  87. Please could you upload a Fleur square..... or better still teach us how to make these ourselves?:D

    ReplyDelete

  96. nancy im having trouble finding it can u send me the link

    ReplyDelete
  97. please nancey help me i realy cant find it

    ReplyDelete
  98. Since you have an older and younger Ron, it would be neat to do a younger Harry and Hermione, also since you have Dudley, there should be Petunia and Vernon Dursley.

    ReplyDelete
  99. What stitch did you do this in--Stockinette, Garter, reverse stockinette, etc...? What size needles did you use? And what weight yarn? BTW, Moaning Myrtle would be awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  100. One more thing. Goodness, I really need to think my questions through to put them on one comment. Is this using intarsia or a different method?

    ReplyDelete
  101. Are you doing anymore of the Dursleys? I would love to see Uncle Vernon and Aunt Petunia instead of just a dudley.

    ReplyDelete
  102. I would love there to be an older version of Ron! I think it would be awkward for there to be an older Harry, Hermione, Fred and George but Ron still be from the 2nd movie :P

    Thanks!

    Maggie

    ReplyDelete
  103. Thank you so much for providing the patterns! It is so rare to find such a brilliant resource for free! :)

    ReplyDelete
  104. I would love to see a seamus chart, please. And I agree with the others who say oliver wood, as well.

    ReplyDelete
  105. I was wondering if there are any written out directions for these squares. The squares are so tiny that it is hard to count how many squares are of what color. I hope there is something.

    ReplyDelete
  106. Does anyone know if there is a good way to convert these patterns into something similar to a crochet by numbers pattern? Like a written format? I far prefer crocheting from a written pattern vs a graph as I find it easier to follow, but I am loathe to count each color and do it myself, far too lazy.

    ReplyDelete
  107. I agree with ward of kaitward, it has to be an easier way, for crochet that is, want to learn how to crochet pics and symbols, some one help please.

    ReplyDelete
  108. pease can we have a video with instructions please

    ReplyDelete
  109. I would like have a written pattern just to help me understand where to change colors and how to work the edging. It would Also help to explain how to make it a Blanket. I don't do well with Charts. Also I notice you don't have the Minister of Magic on there. I think for those Sir Robert Hardy fans it would be nice to have Fudge. Also Quirell and a goblin.

    ReplyDelete
  110. for those looking for the video on her blanket https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eCcrmIR6vbk here it is.. I am not getting sound on my comp though

    ReplyDelete
  116. I crocheted Harry. Now moving on with Hermione. After i finish 16 patterns i will stitch them together to a huge blanket with 16 different characters. It will be hard to choose which ones....

Greetings from a happy Dutch crochet and Harry Potter fan.

    ReplyDelete
  117. please could we have some written instructions please i realy want to make thees but find the pictures confusing

    ReplyDelete
  118. I absolutely love these. However my eyes can't tell discern how many black squares there are in black chunks because the gridlines are black too. Maybe make future ones with contrasting gridlines so people with vision trouble don't struggle as much? I probably can go into paint and add the lines myself though if it's not possible. I plan on making several of these!

    ReplyDelete
  119. I have done all 39 of these and they are superb but I need one more to complete the blanket I am doing for my daughter, are you planning on doing any more?

    ReplyDelete

  129. I love your Harry Potter Graphs. Thank you for sharing. (I've managed to make 4 of the blocks....seems I have an obsession) Just wondering if your still active with your textile transfiguration site. I've noticed people requesting additional charts. I check your site every so often to see if there are updates. (Just curious.)

    Thank you janet Norman x

It did not look like eyes whatsoever and had to resort to putting x's over the eyes. Otherwise, great job the draco and voldemort pattern worked out perfectly.
