PART ONE : gauge

Ok ladies, we're off...

First thing; gauge.

Can I get you all to do a gauge swatch for me

We are looking for 20 stitches and 26 rows to 4 inches/10cms

Questions and comments in the comments section would be best I think.. Please let me know once you are ready to go to the next section and we will continue with part 2 (cast on and crotch)

And again Thankyou ladies for being soo generous with your time to help me with this.

Candice,

I got 20st and 26 rows on 5mm needles and some MK Blackberry ridge yarn . Just waiting for some matching yarn for the waistband now. Is the waistband done in the next step?

Kath - thats great. the next step isnt the waist band :D so your safe :D Are you liking the BBR yarn? I think its devine

donna- Thats great, 8-10 ply hon

Leanne - I am quite unsure what you have done to get the demensions you have, it seems way out of proportion, as in your stitches would need to be REALLY squat for them to be that compressed. The correct way to do a guage is not to knit the exact size either.. are you casting on say 26-28 stitches and knitting on those till it measures 14-15cms. then pinning it witout stretching it to say your ironing board, and holding the tape measure to it and count how many stitches rows to 10cm, not measureing from edges as that will give an incorrect gauge. 20/26 is a standard gauge for 4.5mm needles (but can vary as it does with Kath if you are a looser or tighter knitter) but to get gauge across your stitches but almost only half for your rows would suggest to me that something is wrong.. it would mean each stitch is 5mm wide but only 2mm high.. lol

Yes, the BBR is nice. The colourway is lovely too. Night Rainbow...Yummy. I got it in a swap, lucky me:) Kris is dyeing me up some 100purewool worsted in black/blue to match for the waistband.

ok, I got 20st and 27 rows using andyle merino/polwarth 8 ply (ish) and 4.5m needles. I know that my purl is usually a little tighter than my knit so once I'm knitting in the round (too lazy to swatch in the round) it should be all good :).

Okay I have 21.5 stitches on 29 rows with 8 ply wool and on 4 mm needles.

I await your words of wisdom on this Candice:D

Lucky-1 - what I usually do now is try on the next size up needles ie 4.5mm. You should get less sts and rows in this swatch and hopefully get close to gauge for the pattern.

Thanks Kathok, I'll knit it up again...tomorrow and let you know here how I go:)

sounds fine Leanne, most people knit tighter in purl than knit so will be closer when knitting in the round..
